What is a Lawn Aerator? A lawn aerator is a simple tool used to punch or dig small holes in your yard. This is to help grasses grow and keep your yard greener and healthy. They come in two types, one which is a spike aerator which uses a spike like a wedge to punch holes into your lawn. The other is known as a core aerator that has hollow cores to pull out plugs from your lawn to create small holes for water and oxygen to enter. Using a lawn aerator is very helpful when you have lawn thatch getting too thick and cumbersome preventing proper soil drainage and nutrients and oxygen from getting into your grass. Why Do I Need A Lawn Aerator? As we said above, your lawn can become choked up from the build-up of lawn thatch, and the ground can become compacted from heavy use. This prevents vital nutrients and oxygen from entering into your lawn allowing it to grow thick and green. Using a lawn aerator will also help your grass grow thicker and fuller. For grass to become strong, the roots need to divide to allow them to continue spreading and getting a beautifully lush, good-looking lawn. Grass rarely does this naturally, and so we can use the lawn aerator to force the process of grass roots dividing. Lawn Thatch is good, But Too Much is Bad Like anything in life is it a matter of balance. Lawn thatch is healthy for your yard as it does help regulate the temperature and evapotranspiration when it is the right thickness. Evapotranspiration is when water evaporates from the soil. Lawn thatch can help keep water in for longer allowing your lawn to be hydrated for longer. However, if too thick too much water can be left behind and your grass can drown, or you’ll have a soggy lawn that's no fun to play on. That is why lawn aeration is not only good but necessary.
